Since May 2014, the City Gas Distribution (CGD) Network in India has expanded from 34 Geographical Areas (GAs) to 232 GAs. The current coverage of CGD is stretched over 402 districts, covering 53% of county’s area & 70% of country’s population. As per commitment made by the CGD entities during 9th & 10th CGD bidding round, it will add 4.23 crore of PNG domestic connections, 8181 CNG stations and 1.74 lakhs inch-kms of Steel Pipeline to the present status of CGD infrastructure in the next 8-10 years. Further, the upcoming 11th CGD bidding round is expected to cover additional ~120 districts which will expand the coverage of CGD networks to about 74% of county’s area & 88% of country’s population.

The push for City Gas expansion is a part of Government of India’s plan to reduce emission intensity of GDP (Carbon emission per unit of GDP) by 33%- 35% of 2005 level in the country by 2030 and transform India into a gas-based economy by increasing the share of natural gas in India’s primary energy mix from 6.2% to 15% by 2030.

The CGD sector is still in a nascent stage in India and is emerging as one of the fastest-growing sectors in the country and with the latent potential coupled with multiple programs and initiatives being taken by Government of India to bolster city gas demand, CGD sector is poised to take centre stage as a priority sector in the country.

To sensitize stakeholders about the opportunity emerging with expansion of CGD Sector, a National Conclave on Emerging Opportunities in Natural Gas Sector was held on 23rd January 2020 in New Delhi. This conclave was co-chaired by Hon'ble Minister, P&NG and Steel along with 13 State Ministers. During the interaction with various shareholders, it was decided that a centralised Helpdesk would be created in FIPI for resolving various issues of CGD entities for expeditious development of CGD infrastructure in the country and also to facilitate future interaction with various stakeholders for the benefits of the CGD entities.

As per the advice and subsequent guidance from MoP&NG, CGD Helpdesk portal has been designed at FIPI to provide a centralised platform to all CGD entities for raising their Government Department / Ministry related issues for required intervention at the level of MoP&NG.

To begin with CGD Help desk has been designed to exhaustively address all common issues that need to be escalated at higher level for their speedy resolution. Going forward, this portal aims to keep evolving with time and play a pivotal role in the development of Vendors, Suppliers, and specifically skilled Manpower with a view to build a robust ecosystem for faster and smoother growth of CGD Sector in the country.
